Video Game Soundtrack of the Day

This is Video Game Soundtrack of the Day

A new series where I do a little write-up on a specific video game soundtrack I find interesting. Today's pick: Super Smash Bros. Melee - Trophy/Lottery Music
Super Smash Bros. Melee as a whole had awesome music. The soundtracks are iconic and well known by many Smash Bros. and Nintendo fans alike. While the Trophy/Lottery music may seem like an odd choice compared to the vast array of awesome soundtracks in this game, it does have a unique charm that makes it stand out. It is jumpy and fun! It takes one back to a simpler time (as does much of this game and its music) when completing insane challenges to unlock trophies was literally the biggest goal of the day. Some of those trophies were a big source of gamer rage, too! (Curse you, Crazy Hand!)

After FINALLY unlocking that stubborn trophy you've been working on for what feels like months, you get to go to the trophy gallery and admire it, with this catchy soundtrack playing.

The music also fits the lottery minigame very well as it has a sort of suspenseful feeling about it. The driving percussion and the puzzling melody, the higher section of strings that seems to come in and dance along with the melody as it climaxes and resets to build the tension yet again. The music features a wide variety of instruments, as with many Smash Bros. OSTs. Lots of percussion, strings, prominent winds for the melody and keyboards/organs to fill in the background. It really is an excellent piece of music with a lot more going on than it may seem!

This music feels warm, nostalgic and slightly suspenseful. It easily lodges itself into one's brain at random times. (That's called an Earworm, apparently).

Enjoy the original version (above) and then have a listen to this awesome jazz cover! Seriously, kudos to these guys for seeing the true potential in the Trophy Theme!
